It is located 6 km southeast of Bethlehem. This castle was built in a circular shape on top of the hill, during the reign of King Herod between 15-22 BC. It was surrounded by two walls, and it has four towers, the largest of which is 18 m in diameter. The castle contains fortified rooms, the remains of a huge palace, bathrooms, storage areas, and water collection tanks, in addition to a small theater on its slope. There are gardens and a large pond at the foot of the castle. The castle overlooks the surrounding area, and from its top a wonderful view of the Dead Sea can be seen. Historical accounts claim that this site is the place where King Herod was buried.
